Well its back to the early rise - for some mysterious reason we had an auto wake up call at 4-15am - managhed to get back to sleep until the proper one at 6-30. We were at the Radison Blue and the foyer had this magnificent feature of a tower of wine bottles and inside the tower is a gymnast girl who goes up and down dancing to music to collect the bottles (see photo 1 taken from the 3rd floor glass lift.) After breaky it was on a bus for a tour of Zurich - rain had stopped and so we then had a wander along the main drag where every second shop was a jewellery or watch shop (no change from 10,000 franks) Visited
the Munster (Cathedral) which was the church where Zwingli, the Reformation guy was (Luther, in Germany, Calvin in Geneva). SOme beautiful stain glass windows as also in the Jungfrauen Church which is opposite. Then it was off to the station and the first train ride to Chur (pronounced Kur) and some magnificent scenery as we got closer to the snow line following the RHine River up the valley. Then a train change to a narrower gauge and a WOW trip. Over a bridge and then into a tunnel only to find ourselves doing a hard left turn to come out on top of where we had been. Occasionally there was a waterfall on the side of the steep snow filled crevaces and ravines. FInally we arrived about 3-30pm at our hotel and we are in room 305 - and what a view from our hotel room window - straight across Lake St Moritz to the posher section (most of which is now closed) - and then we wentr for a walk (after paying 9.50 franks for two cups of cappacino!!!) and we got a real impression of the height of the mountains, the depths of the valleys when we look back at our hotel from the lakeside. SNow is lying all around, so naturtally the first thing Graeme did was hurl a handful at Rosslyn - just to get it out of his system. Wow - how the r&f live (rich and famous). Salaries are 6500 franks /mth here for men and 5000 for women. The lake completely freezes over in the winter and is used for skating. 2 winter Olympics have been held here (1928, 1948. Tomorrow we are meant to go from here to Zermatt on the Glacier Express, but there is some doubt as to whether this can happen as there is an avalanche which is threatening to fall and so we won't know if we can do it til later as usually they bring the avalanche down so it won't cause any damage - the train was hit by one last year. Avalanches happen all the time, it is just a matter of managing them. Let you know later what happens.
