Well, if yesterday was a WOW day, today was a WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWW day. We were able to catch the Glacier Express, - the avalanche was either a non-entity or not a threat. We went back down the hill to CHur over the tall bridge which is the feature of the Express and then headed off up to Disensor where we changed engines to one which has a rack and pinion and cog mechanism which allowed us to up to the Oberalppasse about 2400m above sea level. Photo shows the road next to the railway line. Everything was so white, so glarey that it was hurtful on the eyes, even for those with sunglasses. How easy it was to understand snow blindness and disorientation because you can't tell what is cloud and what is snow. Going down was a descent of 12%, very steep indeed and the engine locks on to the cogs that are in the centre of the other rails.
We arrived at Brig and then started another serious climb back up to Zermatt about 1800m. No cars are alloowed in the town only electric service vehicles and so we then had to walk 20mins or so in the rain up to our hotel (Antares). Hope rain doesn't continue tomorrow but I doubt if we will be able to see the Matyterhorn which is so close to where we are.
Hi Graeme & Ros,
ReplyDeleteI have just joined your blog. What a fantastic trip you are having. I have just read thru all the blogs and have throughly enjoyed "travelling" around with you. Your photos are great. What sort of camera are you using?
Natalie & Megan headed off last week as you mentioned. I'm sure they will also have a fabulous time. It seemed surreal that the next time you see each other it will be in Vienna!!!
Continue to have a wonderful time & I look forward to following the rest of your travels.
Love, Jen
