The hills are alive

An early rise today to head off from Vienna to Salzburg - a scenic drive along the Danube Valley and a "wee" break at Durnstein famous for its ruined castle in which Richard the Lion heart was imprisoned during the Crusades and then off the autobahn into what is called the Lakes Districts and a brief stop at Gmunden at Traun See (Lake Traun) on our way to Mond See (Moon Lake). It was in the baroque church that Maria von Trapp (only in the film) was married - a highly ornate altar. A bonus was that there was a viwsiting choir performing while we were there and their sound was magical in the huge abbey building. Then was a short drive into Salzburg (Salt Castle) where we have just had a walking tour of the town - saw the Do ra mi steps and garden, the foujntain where Maria contemplates her return to the von Trapps, other lanes and alleyways of old Salzburg and the three homes where Mozart lived before heading off to Vienna. We have now just booked in at the Hotel Europa on the 11th floor with great views across to the snow-covered hills that surround the city. It also has FREE Wifi - but no kettle in the room. These are the two criteria by which we are judging our hotels. It is another early rise in the morning as we are going up one of the moujntains to over 5500 feet to a place called The Eagle's Nest, Hitler's hideaway, from there we then head to Innsbruch and tomorrow night is the little Bavarian village of Oberammergau - we're nearly there to do accomplish what the last 2 years of planning has been all about. Not sure what connections we'll be able to do until we get to Munich. We'll see. Love to all.

  1. How lovely following your trip. You both look so well. The fun begins now with Natalie on board. How hard is it going to be to settle down at life at Trinity again. Enjoy your final week, love to all, May.
