Best of Britain

Friday 9th

Was a relaxing morning and a sleep in. Thomas arrived at quarter to 12 to take us to the airport - good flight from Hamburg to London but a little cloudy. We foil befoe hitting the city of Salisburylowed the Dutch coast and could make out some features. On landing we negotiated the Heathrow Express into Paddington and then lugged cases up and down stairs to the local train to the Wimbledon train to FUlham Boulevard station which then had a short walk to the Chelsea Football Ground where our hotel was. We then found a laundromat and so all our baggage is now refreshed! We also found a lovely little Italian restraunt for a pizza tea and then early to bed for an early rise - 6-15am - a shock to the system to be on the bus by 7-30 for Day 1 of "The Best of Britain."

Sat 10th -

Our first stop was Stonehenge on the Salisbury Plains not big in size but big in mystery and a 1 hour stop. We then moved on to Salisbury and the magnificent medieval Cathedral where the choir was practicing. We also saw one of the orignal four extant copies of the Magna Carta and then wandered the old town eating as we walked. We left by coach taking a back way through a nyumber of English country lanes and quaint little villages with their thatched roofed cottages and neatly trimmed hawthorn bush hedgerows (all protected by law). There were lots of May blossoms, daffodils and jonquils as we made our way through Somerset to Devon on this sunny spring drive. Devon is hilly but picturesque as we came past Dartmoor into Plymouth and down to the port area where the Plymouth Fathers set off to found America and also where the 1st fleet left to come to Oz
The camera is taking magnificent photos - thanks Trinity!! More of Plymouth tomorrow and then into Cornwall for the day - some family history to be lived.

  1. Hi Sis and Graeme,

Great to read about your adventures and see your photos. You don't seem *quite so far away when we can check in and "see" you here.

Thanks for the SMS for my birthday this morning, that was really nice. All the family were here last night for a meal together, and I'm spending a quiet day today just catching up before an early start in the morning.

    Love to you both
    Wendy
