Palaces in Potsdam (or - Kaiser Crawl)

Firstly it is good to have May on board with us - wilkommen May!

We left our boat yesterday morning and decided to ctach our train and go out to Potsdam (26km from Berlin) It is the capital of the state of Brandenburg and was the royal seat of the Prussian kings - Frederick and Wilhelm. We visited the New Palace, the San Souci Palace and the Cecelienhof Palace. There was no time to actually go into the palaces and many of them are under major repair but we were shown some photos of their once grandeur. Cecelienhof wqas the the site of tthe Big 3 conference in World War 2 with Atlee, Truman and Stalin which eventually decided (sealed) the fate of a divided Germany. Back to Berlin and a visit to St Marien's Church (built 1270) It is undergoin internal repaint and renovation, but someone was playing the organ - a beuatiful sound filling the buildiong. We went to the Rathaus (Town Hall) before coming back by train to Hamburg. There was a brief stop at Wittenberg - couldn't see anything - but if only Luther could see it now, maybe he might publish a different set of theses!

Thomas met us at the train station and we were given a tour ofHamburg city by night - how beautiful.

Off to London by plane this afternoon.

  1. G'day G & R,
May Ross & Jill are following your trip and enjoying the photos as if we were with you. (I could have been if the council paid).
You might be in London for the announcement of the William & Kate engagement (rumours are flying around-do you have an update so we can announce to Australia).
    Safe Travel
    Love May & the Bibbys
